20 Million in 2012 Goal. On the heels of reaching a nationwide goal of registering 100
million eye, organ and tissue donors in the U.S., Donate Life America has issued a new
challenge to partners in donation nationwide. This year, we are starting a bold initiative of
“20 Million in 2012.” That means that across the country, we hope to register 20 million new
donors on state organ and tissue donor registries.
You can play your part in the goal by directing individuals to www.donatelifekansas com to
register to become a donor. Keep up with what’s going on in the campaign by visiting

HLEB Floragraph Honors Lives of Two Incredible WomenOn January 2, the lives of two
incredible women close to the Eye Bank family were honored during the 2012 Rose Parade.
Adorning the Donate Life America (DLA) float, “… One More Day,” were floragraphs, or floral
portraits, of 72 eye, organ and tissue donors who gave the gift of life. One of those
featured was Mariah West, who was a donor through the Eye Bank and Midwest Transplant
Network. Said Mariah’s mother, Merry, “Mariah was very generous by nature. In her own
words from her social networking site – ‘I love to help everyone. If I have it in my power to
do something for you, I never hesitate.’ It was this spirit that led us to continue her legacy
of giving through organ donation.”
The Eye Bank chose to honor Mariah’s donation in memory of Darian Vanderhoofven, our
colleague who lost her life in the tornado which hit Joplin, Mo. Darian worked closely with
area hospitals in their annual local rose dedication ceremonies tied to the Donate Life float.
At an April 2011 Celebration of Life event, Darian was touched by Mariah’s story after
meeting her mother. Because of Darian’s direct involvement in planning local hospital rose
dedications and her connection with Mariah’s family, the Eye Bank felt sponsoring a
floragraph of Mariah would be a very special way to honor Darian’s work in the promotion
of eye donation. For photos of the floragraph and the Rose Parade float please visit the
HLEB Facebook page at www.facebook.com/HeartlandLEB.
